Studio Negativ carefully evaluates each piece of equipment. Check out what’s behind our condition rating.
Our rating classifies the equipment’s cosmetic, optical and mechanical condition, providing a clearer overall picture of the product. This promotes transparency and helps you make informed decisions. Keep in mind that a 60-year-old camera will not be in the same condition as a new digital camera, and that each piece of equipment has its unique history.
As you browse our shop, you’ll see the cosmetic condition of each product noted in the corner of its photo. The product description's drop-down menu provides a detailed cosmetic, mechanical, and optical condition rating. If a product feature cannot be classified within the condition rating, this is also noted in the drop-down menu. Feel free to contact us if you have questions about the condition rating.
Cosmetic condition rating
Assessment of the external appearance – body, finish, and surfaces.
Mint
Like new and flawless. The body shows absolutely no signs of use. Often still in its original packaging or with all accessories included. The item is in absolutely top condition.
Excellent
Very good condition. The item has been handled with care. At most, minimal signs of use are visible upon very close inspection. No loss of finish or material.
Very good
Good condition with normal signs of use. Small scratches or slight scuff marks may be present without significantly affecting the appearance.
Good
Visible signs of wear are present. Scratches, scuffs, or minor chips on the case are visible. All defects are described in the listing.
Fair
Significant wear and heavy signs of use. Larger scratches, dents, or extensive scuffing may be present. All defects are described in the listing.
Project
Significant damage to the body. Dents, cracks, or heavily damaged areas are present. Suitable as a restoration or spare-parts project.
Optical condition rating
Assessment of the lens elements – clarity, coating, cleanliness, and optical quality.
Mint
Perfect optical condition. The glass is absolutely clear and flawless. No scratches, no fog, no dust, no mold – like new in every respect.
Excellent
Very good optical condition. The glass is clear and free of visible defects. At most, tiny dust particles may be present, but they do not affect image quality.
Very good
Good optical condition. Minimal traces, such as very slight haze or isolated dust particles, may be present. Image quality is not affected.
Good
Minor optical flaws present. Fine scratches, a slight haze, or dust inclusions may be present. Image quality is not affected.
Fair
Noticeable optical flaws. More significant haze, scratches, or dust particles may be present. Image quality may be affected in certain situations.
Project
Significant optical flaws or defects present. Scratches, separation, fungus, or other defects are present. Image quality is compromised. Suitable as a restoration or spare-parts project.
Mechanical condition rating
Assessment of all moving parts, switches, controls, and overall functionality.
Mint
All mechanical functions operate flawlessly and precisely. The item is in like-new condition in every respect. Items in this category may have been recently overhauled (CLA).
Excellent
Very good mechanical condition. All functions operate reliably and correctly. Minimal wear may be noticeable in isolated cases, without affecting functionality in any way.
Very good
Good mechanical condition. All essential functions are intact. Slight wear may be noticeable but does not limit usability.
Good
Functional with signs of wear. Minor inaccuracies or a slightly stiff mechanism may be present. An overhaul may be recommended, but the item can still be used.
Fair
Limited functionality. Some functions may be unreliable. A repair or overhaul is recommended. All defects are described in the listing.
Project
Mechanically defective or severely limited in function. Suitable for repair, spare parts, or experienced technicians. All defects are described in the listing.
