The New FD 28mm f/2.8 arrived in 1979 as part of Canon's redesigned New FD lineup, built to shrink the size and weight of the original FD 28mm f/2.8 without touching its optical formula. At 170g and just 63 x 40mm, it's one of the more pocketable wide-angles Canon made for the system — small enough to stay mounted on an AE-1 or A-1 without upsetting the camera's balance.

Optically it's a quietly capable performer: sharp from the center out to the edges even wide open, with only mild softness in the corners at f/2.8, and it tightens up further by f/4–f/5.6. Collectors often note the five-blade diaphragm renders stopped-down highlights as pentagons rather than smooth circles — part of its character rather than a flaw. It mounts via Canon's New FD breech-lock bayonet, takes 52mm filters, and focuses down to 0.30m. Colors come out natural with a clean, understated contrast rather than a heavy vintage look.

We're fond of how it handles day to day — wide, smooth focus throw and confident half-stop aperture clicks make it an easy lens to shoot by feel. A dependable, unfussy 28mm for anyone on an FD-mount body who wants width without adding bulk.
