Carl Zeiss 50mm 1.4 Planar T*

Description:

The Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 is the standard-bearer of the Contax/Yashica system — the lens Contax shooters reached for when nothing else would do. Built for the Contax/Yashica (C/Y) bayonet mount, it's a classic double-Gauss design with seven elements in six groups, housed in an all-metal barrel with a 55mm filter thread.

Wide open at f/1.4 it's known for a certain "3D pop" — a depth and micro-contrast collectors and shooters still talk about — though corners soften and vignetting shows at that aperture, typical for a fast fifty of this generation. Stop down to f/2.8 or f/4 and it sharpens up nicely across the frame, helped by Zeiss's T* multi-coating, which keeps flare and ghosting well under control.

Focus and aperture rings turn with the smooth, weighted precision Zeiss lenses are known for — the kind of lens that makes manual shooting feel deliberate rather than fiddly.
